Sudden Sensorineural Hearing
Loss: Building awareness of a little-known condition

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), also known as sudden deafness, is an unexplained rapid loss of hearing, which typically occurs in one ear.  The loss can happen instantly or over a period of several days.

SSNHL strikes only one person in 5,000 in the U.S. each year, although many cases go undiagnosed, primarily due to a lack of public awareness.  Nevertheless, if you believe you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms of SSNHL, please know it is considered a serious medical condition that requires immediate attention by an ear, nose and throat doctor (ENT) or a clinical audiologist because early treatment can possibly save your hearing.

Hearing Loss and Dementia

Research has recently shown the correlation between untreated hearing loss and the development of dementia.

At Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, studies have revealed hearing loss may present even greater risk to one's mental health than previously considered.  Armed with this new information, it's increasingly important to encourage your friends and loved ones to make more informed and timely decisions about their overall healthcare.
